Gordon served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from August 2005 to March 2007.

In December 2003, Gordon retired from Verizon Communications where he had served as President, Retail Markets Group since June 2000.

Prior to that, Gordon served as Group President, Enterprise Business with Bell Atlantic Corporation (Verizon's predecessor) since December 1998.

He served as Group President, Consumer and Small Business Services of Bell Atlantic from 1993 to August 1997, and as Group President, Retail, from August 1997 to December 1998.

Gordon is also a director of Northrop Grumman Corporation and The ADT Corporation.
