Berman joined Memorial Drive Trust, the entity that held the profit sharing assets for Arthur D. Little, Inc. employees, in 1986 after graduating from Harvard Business School. This group served as the precursor organization for the formation of MDT Advisers, Inc. in 1988 where Berman was President, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer.

During his years at MDT, Berman ran the Venture Investments Group and served on the Boards of Directors of many public and private companies such as Mercury Computer Systems, Helix, Arch Communications Group, Arthur D. Little, Keurig, Wright Express and IVS.

In 1990, Berman initiated the development of the Optimum Q domestic equity quantitative model. The model proved very successful, beating the S&P 500 by more than 450 basis points on a compound annual basis over more than fifteen years, and was one of only 30 products included in Smith Barney's top tier investment platform.

The firm was acquired by Harris Bretall Sullivan & Smith L.L.C. in 2002. Berman became a member of Harris Bretall's Board of Directors, Management Committee and Strategy Team. Harris Bretall was sold to Federated, Inc. in 2005 and Berman retired. He then co-founded a development company in Lincoln, New Hampshire and currently serves as a director on several private company boards.

Prior to joining MDT Advisers, Inc. in 1986, Berman had extensive experience in both the founding, operating and investing functions of business. He co-founded the Mariposa School in 1970, a private elementary and high school, and in 1974, the Mendocino County Recycling Center, both located in Ukiah, California. The Recycling Center was noted as the first in the country to offer residential curbside pick-up. In 1978, Berman was the General Manager and Publisher of Solar Age Magazine. He co-founded Helio Construction in 1979, a passive solar design and construction company, which he owned and operated until its sale in 1982.

Berman received his B.A. in English from Stanford University in 1970, and his M.B.A. from Harvard Graduate School of Business in 1984, with the distinction of being a Baker Scholar.
